Division History

1993 | The “Visual Communication Interest Group” is founded at the ICA conference in Washington, D.C. (Steering committee: Kevin Barnhurst, Michael Griffin, Larry Gross)

2002 | Divisional status for the interest group is proposed at the ICA Executive Board meeting in Seoul, Korea

2004 |  The now “Visual Studies Division” is granted divisional status after maintaining a level of 200 members for 2 years

2009 | The division’s name is changed into “Visual Communication Studies Division” to regain the focus on communication instead of visual culture
